Why Remove That Stump?
- Curb Appeal — Stumps are an eyesore; grinding instantly improves the look of your yard
- Property Value — A clean, stump-free lawn is more attractive to buyers
- Safety — Hidden stumps are trip hazards for family, guests, and lawn equipment
- Pest Control — Rotting stumps attract termites, carpenter ants, and other wood-boring insects
- Lawn Health — Stumps compete for nutrients and can harbor disease that spreads to healthy trees
- New Planting — Free up space to plant new trees, shrubs, or sod
- Mowing Safety — No more swerving around stumps while mowing
Our Stump Grinding Process
We grind stumps 6–12 inches below grade — deep enough to allow sod or new plantings over the area. All chips are either raked back into the hole as organic fill or removed upon request. We check for utilities before grinding and work carefully around landscaping and structures.

Why Remove Tree Stumps From Your Property?
A leftover tree stump seems harmless — until it causes a problem. Stumps left in the ground attract carpenter ants, termites, and other wood-boring insects that can eventually migrate toward your home. They become tripping hazards for children and guests, obstacles for lawn mowing, and eyesores that drag down curb appeal. In Florida’s humid climate, stumps decompose slowly and can harbor fungal disease that spreads to surrounding healthy trees.
Problems Stumps Cause
- Attract termites, carpenter ants & beetles
- Spread fungal root disease to nearby trees
- Create tripping hazards in your yard
- Damage lawn mowers and equipment
- Sprout new growth around the base
- Reduce your home’s curb appeal and value
- Take up lawn and garden space
Benefits of Grinding

- Removes tripping hazard immediately
- Frees up usable yard space
- Allows sod, landscaping or hardscaping over the area
- Stops stump sprouting for good
- Improves the appearance of your yard
- Fast — most stumps done in under an hour
Stump Grinding vs. Full Stump Removal
Stump grinding and full stump removal are two different approaches. Grinding uses a commercial rotating cutting wheel to mechanically shred the stump 6–12 inches below grade. The remaining material is wood chips that decompose naturally over 2–3 years. The surface is filled and ready for sod or landscaping.
Full stump removal pulls the entire root ball out of the ground, which is more invasive, more expensive, and typically only necessary for construction projects that need a root-free foundation. For most residential applications, stump grinding is the right choice — it’s faster, more affordable, and leaves your yard in great condition.
Frequently Asked Questions — Stump Grinding
How much does stump grinding cost in Sarasota FL?
Stump grinding in Sarasota typically costs $100–$400 per stump depending on diameter, root spread, and access. Many companies charge a minimum fee for small stumps. When you have multiple stumps ground in one visit, the per-stump price drops significantly. Yoder’s offers free on-site estimates — call (941) 451-9730 or contact us online.
How deep does stump grinding go?
Our commercial stump grinders cut 6–12 inches below the soil surface. This is deep enough to allow sod, landscaping, or light hardscaping (pavers, mulch beds) over the area. If you need the area ready for a deck foundation or deep construction, we can grind deeper on request.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No. Grinding destroys the cambium layer and root collar that allow trees to regenerate. Unlike cutting a stump flush with the ground, grinding eliminates regrowth. Some tree species (like oak) can send up root sprouts nearby, but the original stump will not re-sprout after proper grinding.
How long does stump grinding take?
Most individual stumps are ground in 30–60 minutes. Large stumps with wide root flares may take longer. A typical job with 3–5 stumps is usually completed in a half day. We grind, clean up the chips, and leave the area ready for your next project.
Can I plant grass or a new tree over a ground stump?
Yes. After grinding, you can fill the area with topsoil, wait 2–4 weeks for any settling, then lay sod or seed. Planting a new tree directly over a ground stump is not ideal — the decaying chips can create soil chemistry issues. Wait at least one growing season, or remove the chip material and replace with fresh topsoil before planting a new tree.
Do you haul away the wood chips after grinding?
Yes — we can haul away all grinding debris. Alternatively, many homeowners choose to keep the chips as mulch for garden beds. Just let us know your preference when you book. Either way, the surface is left clean and level.
